Recently Nanci Wilson of the FCC Licensed Austin television station KEYE (Channel 42) investigated the outrageous pay of Texas school superintendents.

Nanci’s report, “Central Texas superintendents are making big bucks” reported on the salaries of many of Texas superintendent’s salaries, including Rocky’s.

Nanci reported on the outrageous salary that Rocky makes and how his salary does not seem to be tied to district performance. I guess that I am not the only one who wonders how this keeps happening.

I really liked Nanci’s comparison of Rocky to the Austin ISD Superintendent. Here are the numbers she reported. I added a row showing how each of their salaries compares if normalized to the number of students in their respective districts:

  AISD Superintendent Rocky
Salary $276,000 $231,000
Schools 110 8
Students 82,000 5,850
$ per Student $3.37 $39.49

As a result of Nanci’s report, the LTISD Board acted swiftly to try and lessen the impact of just how bad they look by continuing to increase the pay of clearly unsatisfactory results from Rocky.

“Response from Lake Travis ISD:

`Since the inception of the TAKS in 2003, overall test scores at the Lake Travis Independent School District have increased by 16 percent. We attribute this impressive trend to our chief instructional leader and the unwavering commitment he and his administration have placed on student achievement. We wholeheartedly believe our superintendent’s compensation is a reflection of a student-centered, high-performing organizational culture which continues to yield superior results.’

-Jim Cummings, LTISD Board President”

(Source “Central Texas superintendents are making big bucks“)

Jim, if the overall test scores increased by 16 percent, does that mean that if they had not improved the LTISD would be “Academically Unacceptable?” Jim must not remember when the LTISD was rated as “Recognized” or even “Exemplary” before Rocky’s arrival.

Jim, where do you get this data? We all know that the LTISD plays fast and loose with what many people call the “truth,” so we want to know your sources and verify them for ourselves. “Rocky Facts” won’t cut it here.

Jim, please tell me and the rest of the tax payers in the LTISD just how Rocky has been a “reflection of a student-centered, high-performing organizational culture which continues to yield superior results?”

Jim, we really deserve to know where are these “superior results?”

Remember Jim: You can’t polish a turd! Something you and the rest of the Board should know by now.
