The Austin American-Statesman reported on February 22, 2007, that the Superintendent Round Rock ISD had recently been given a salary raise of 8.5% (Link is no longer valid) (compared to Rocky’s 13.3% in only 5 months) to $221,991 per year. Of course he only has 27 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, 5 high schools (44 schools) and 37,847 students to manage.
Let’s compare to Rocky’s situation, $213,000 per year with 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 1 high school (8 schools) and 5,300 students.
Using the 2005-2006 student numbers from TEA, we can easily find that:
| Superintendent | $/Student | $/School |
|---|---|---|
| Jesús Chávez | $5.86 | $5,045 |
| Rocky Kirk | $40.18 | $26,265 |
Rocky is getting paid about as much as the Round Rock Superintendent but with only 14% as many students and 18% as many schools to manage!
Don’t tell Jesús Chávez (Superintendent of the Round Rock ISD) that, or he may go back to his district and ask for much more!
Let’s ask ourselves:
- How much better is Rocky that Jesús?
- Why do we, the LTISD tax payers, need to pay Rocky so disproportionately higher than everyone else?
- Why does the LTISD Board see the value of a superintendent so differently than the Round Rock ISD Board?
