UPDATE: I recently discovered from an article in the Lake Travis View that Dr. Kirk’s salary is over $200k! When did this occur? The Lake Travis View recently printed Rocky’s salary: $201,253.90! This information was recently provided to the Lake Travis View by Melissa Loe. I will be updating this section soon to reflect the latest changes.

Here is a copy of Dr. Kirk’s employment contract. The latest numbers show his annual salary to be $188,000. Not bad for a district with only 5307 students (number from TEA as of October 2005). That comes out to $35.42 per student. The state average salary for a superintendent is $96,515 (based on TEA 2005-2006 Staff FTE and Salary Reports). Dr. Kirk is paid almost two times the state average!

According to this data, there are 4,408,027 students enrolled in 1032 Independent School Districts in Texas. This means that there is an average of 4271 students per Independent School District. The LTISD only has 24% more students than the state average yet the Houston school district has 392% more students than the state average, yet their superintendent is only paid 2.2 times the state average salary for superintendents.

You might want to review the 2006-2007 LTISD Teacher Pay Scale to make further comparisons. I do not know the average teacher salary at the LTISD, but he average teacher salary for the state is $41,743 (based on TEA 2005-2006 Staff FTE and Salary Reports). Using information from the LTISD District Profile, the average LTISD teaching experience is 12 years. Using the LTISD Teacher Pay Scale, that means the average LTISD teacher is paid $44,500 (Bachelor’s Degree) and $45,636 (Master’s Degree).

The LTISD only pays teachers about 8% more than the state average, yet they pay Dr. Kirk 84% more than the state average for superintendents!
